The Maha Mritunjaya mantra is a one of the most oldest and powerful hymns in the Vedas and is believed that Rishi Markendeya was explained about the significance of this mantra by Lord Shiva himself. As per mythology, this sacred mantra was used to save the life of Chandra Dev who was cursed by King Daksh.
In Sanskrit, the word ‘Maha’ means great, ‘Mrityun’ means death and ‘Jaya’ means victory and thus, it signifies victory over death. The grace of Lord Shiva bestows one with a long and healthy life, protection against premature death and the realization to overcome the fear of death.
