Kanak Dhara is a form of the Goddess Lakshmi. “Kanak” refers to “wealth” and "Dhara" refers to "flow" thus Kanakdhara means the continuous flow of wealth and luck.
The origin of this Puja ranks to the ancients times. The Kanak Dhara Stotram was created by Adi Shankaracharya when once asking for alms he encounters a poor woman who has nothing to offer him, so she offers him an amla (Emblic Myrobalan/Indian Gooseberry).
Astounded and touched by the generosity of the poor woman he sang the Kanak Dhara Stotram to appease Goddess Lakshmi to shower the poor woman with riches.
However, Goddess Lakshmi refused saying that the poor woman had to suffer her past life karma. Shankara pleaded the Goddess saying that lady's act of complete generosity should release her of her sins of the past and that the divine Goddess was the one who could change the fate of the woman and thereby Goddess Lakshmi was so touched and pleased by the act of kindness performed by the poor old woman that she instantly showered the lady's house with goose berries made of pure gold.
This puja is highly beneficial for natives suffering from a weak or afflicted Venus in their horoscope.
